Connect 2 (38) v Penryn 2 (34)
After a disappointing lose to Penzance last week Connect 2 were eager as ever to get the next game underway. New game, clean slate, everyone entered the game with a positive attitude and were ready to give 110% effort.
After taking an unexpected early lead Connect 2 were on fire and playing like a team that had played together for years. With shot after shot being sunk into the net the confidence of Connect 2 continued to grow. The final score at the end of the first quarter was 11-6 to Connect 2. The team came off the court with smiles all round and after a few motivating words from our coach Kerry we were all buzzing to get back on court and get the next quarter underway and hopefully increase our lead.
The second quarter began and you could tell Penryn were beginning to feel the pressure Connect 2 were forcing upon them. Connect 2 continued their great teamwork and game play they had previously demonstrated in the first quarter. Our shooters Rosie (GA) and Bernie (GS) continued to provide the team and our supporters with mind blowing shots. One supporter (my mum) described their shots as OUTSTANDING! And I have to say I think that we would all agree with that. The ball was flowing continuously through each third of the court throughout the second quarter and with some brilliant interceptions from Sharon ( C) we were able to get a fair few turn-overs and keep our early lead. At the end of the second quarter the score was 20-17 to Connect 2.
Half time felt like forever and we could not wait to get back on court and show Penryn what we were made of. After Penryn made a few changes Connect 2 knew that they couldn’t let their level of play slip due to Penryn having a fresh pair of legs on court. We had to give 150% no matter what and go for every ball! Our defence we’re giving all they had and were totally committed this really paid off and Alex (GD) and Lyn (GK) had numerous rebounds and interceptions. They were not fased by the pressure of the Penryn attack and they never gave up. Penryn began to creep back and decrease the lead that we had worked so hard for. Our captain Kelly (WD) could see that we were losing our drive so she made sure she kept us motivated and talking. Kelly also showed that she was not ready to give up and gave her all going for every 50 /50 ball. During this quarter game play become a bit scrappy from both sides but we continued to be 100% committed. Penryn caught up and it was neck and neck. Throughout the third quarter it was goal for goal but we did not give up and continued to push and apply the pressure. However Penryn managed to creep ahead and at the end of the third quarter the score was 27-28 to Penryn.
With a few more encouraging words from both Kerry and Kelly, Connect 2 went back onto the court ready to give Penryn a run for their money and really give it our all. We had nothing to lose but all to gain. And this was one match we refused to lose. The final quarter was brilliant with our defence making some great interceptions, our centre court players bringing the ball down the court smoothly, our attack getting the ball into the shooters and our shooters scoring almost 100% of the time and not letting the Penryn defence pressure them, it really was brilliant. Every single member of the team gave it everything they had and it paid off! (even though a few of us including myself did drop like a sack of potatoes on more than one occasion) The final score was 34-38 to Connect 2!! We were all ecstatic with our win and were so chuffed! I have to say, I think this is the best game we have played together all season SO FAR. I hope there are more games to come like this where we really pull together and play like the brilliant team we are!! Well done girls what a fab game to play and a fab a team to I’m proud to be apart of!! Bring on the rest of the season J
P.s: Sharon went home with a finger that looked like a butternut squash and mine looks like a bruised banana! Hahahahaha. All in the name of the game. Sooooo worth it.

Connect 3 (30) v LNC Panthers (39)
On an extremely cold, late night the 3rds went on the long road trip to Liskeard, feeling very optimistic following the huge improvement in the team performance against Penzance in the last game. We welcomed back Tamsyn but were unable to have Jackie, so Sophie Tregonning very kindly came along as a sub. With the match underway some silly mistakes from our centre passes resulted in Connect going 4 nil down before they even had time to blink, Connect then settled down and after some great work by the defence and good all round team work the girls managed to reach the end of the 1st quarter only 6 goals behind, Connect were the more dominant team in the 2nd quarter, some great team work in both theĀ attacking and defending circles brought out some nerves in the LIskeard side and at half time the deficit was only 5 and Connect really felt like they could turn the game around. Unfortunately this was not the case, some dubious umpiring decisions went against us throughout the whole of the 3rd quarter, this prevented us from making any headway to the score and managed to cause a lot of frustration and upset in the team as in many cases the umpiring decisions were incorrect and not justified. At the end of the 3rd quarter Connect trailed by about 10, after encouraging the girls to just go out, hold their heads up high and play their own game and try to ignore the umpiring and somewhat physical side some Liskeard players were enforcing onto them, the girls remained positive and put up a good display for the last 15mins. We ended up losing by 9 goals, 39-30, I felt this did not truly reflect the game and we made some improvements again, it can really be seen the team gelling together and some really great partnerships are being formed. Spectator and taxi driver Mike commented on how well Poppy and Maddie played and the whole team congratulated Beth on how much progress she has made since the beginning of the season and is now becoming a great asset to the 3rd team. The girls are now looking forward to Mondays match against Falmouth who also have yet to win a game so a real tight, good match is on the cards.
Well done to everyone who made the trip and especially Sophie who travelled all that way to score for me.
